Opening Day (song)

There are hundreds of songs about Christmas, but not one about the best holiday of the year: Opening Day. So the weekend before the Red Sox’ 2008 home opener, I sat down and wrote a song about Opening Day (lyrics below). On Sunday night, after my kids were all in bed, I recorded it in my basement onto my Mac laptop using GarageBand software. Five tracks: two acoustic guitars and three vocals. Less than 36 hours after being recorded, the song made its radio debut on the Loren and Wally morning show on WROR (105.7 FM).

Opening Day

Opening Day!
by Rob Crawford (ASCAP)

Well it’s Opening Day
Winter’s gone, let’s celebrate
Skipping school for the game
Got no choice, it’s in my D.N.A.
Baseball everyday ’til fall
Sing Spangled Stars, then let’s play ball
Yes it’s Opening Day
Life’s good again

Opening Day!
Opening Day!

Well it’s Opening Day
Winter’s gone, spring starts today
Skipping work for the game
Guess I’ll update my resume
From Japan to Canada
U.S.A. to Latin America
Yes it’s Opening Day
Life’s good again

Opening Day!
Opening Day!
This year our team’s going all the way
It all starts on Opening Day

Well it’s Opening Day
Winter ended yesterday
Skipping school for the game
It’s baseball’s own religious holiday
And the rockets’ red glare
The bombs bursting in air
Yes it’s Opening Day
Life’s good again

Baseball everyday ’til fall
No more hot stove, let’s play ball
Yes it’s Opening Day
Life’s good again

Opening Day!

  1. great opening day song

  2. Maybe I’m missing something, but I can’t seem to download either song. I live in Oregon…I need to represent my Sox in a land dominated by Trailblazer basketballers! HELP!

  3. Hey Rob. I just found the song and had a listen. Terrific song about how one feels about Opening Day and the possibilities for the season. Thanks much. I just posted it as the Baseball Song of the Day on my blog; http://baseballsongoftheday.blogspot.com. Good Luck on the Sox this year. (My Cubs are still waiting…waiting…..waiting). I’ll follow up with another one of your songs at a later point in the season. Happy to have found you and your site.

  4. Hey Rob! We have something in common: An Opening Day song! Just Googled :Opening Day Song” to see how ours might have increased in posts, as as it did of course. But I saw your site too! Cool song and idea! Very good production and performance. Good write too, with clever lyrics!

Scott Campbell wrote ours that I just sing on, and play live with my “Too Little Time” band. Maybe you can do what I did to get it played at the Phillies ballpark for every Opening Day since 2008,,,,,and that is, I asked! Just ask someone in the office during early winter to listen to yours for possible playing over the loudspeakers at your Fenway Park. Just ask them! I happened to ask Greg Luzinski, who listened to it on his way home during the last preseason game in 2008. he gave it to the Phils office the next day, and to our surprise, I got a call from the ballpark on Opening Day form my granddaughter, who asked: “Did you sing a baseball song about Opening Day?! A huge thrill for us all. I heard it play for the 2009 opener. This year, I heard it in the background of the TV pregame.

Wish you luck with your good Opening Day song!
